TOOTING FOLK

Brazen Thieves are a new quartet made up of sisters Laura (voice and violin) and Rebecca Woolf (voice, guitar and concertina), and Lucy Gaster (vocals and cello) and Mark Fraser (guitar). Laura and Rebecca began their recent foray into folk by adapting songs and arrangements originally selected by their father, Clive Woolf, for his sets when he was playing on the scene in the late 60s/early 70s. This inspired the name Brazen Thieves.  Brazen Thieves combine contemporary and classical influences to create new and interesting takes on traditional songs, with a strong emphasis on harmony singing.

Back to Tooting Folk by popular demand, Hatful of Rain are an East Sussex trio (previously quartet)  made up of Chloe Overton – vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica. Phil Jones, double bass, vocals, guitar, banjo and Fred Gregory, guitar, vocals and mandolin. Their music is a blend of Folk/Americana styles, centred round songs with timeless themes of love and loss, domestic hardships, migration, identity, celebration & grief. They have released 4 CDs to date and toured widely in the UK on the folk circuit; pubs & bars, villages halls, festivals, house concerts and theatres.

Sophie Crawford sings traditional English folk music as well as her own songs accompanying herself variously with accordion, dulcimer and ukulele. Her voice is a thing of beauty, managing to be both powerful but delicate at the same time. She released her debut album ‘Silver Pin’ in November 2018 for which she has been touring extensively. She also runs the monthly singaround at the Harrison in Kings Cross. Alongside this, she is heavily involved in theatre as a performer, producer and artistic director.

The Old Time Wasters play and sing American traditional old-time music and songs drawn from the dark and dusty corners of the 20’s and 30’s string band repertoire, with the occasional detour into English music-hall. Their often eccentric and amusing selections are complemented with rock-solid rhythm and infectious three-part harmonies.

The first TOOTING FOLK of 2019 is on Saturday 5 January and we are lucky enough to be featuring Ed Hopwood as our featured act.

Ed is a multi-instrumentalist and harmonica virtuoso who plays traditional songs and his own compositions. Whilst Ed’s music is firmly grounded in Blues and roots music, the songwriting is very much in the present and Ed’s blues is a living & breathing art, not a relic from the past.

As usual, we will also have floor spots, so come and have a go at a song!

Born a hundred years late and 4000 miles too far East, The Ninetree Stumblers dredge up nuggets of the Old Weird America from the crackly grooves of 78RPM shellac. Multi-instrumentalists from Bristol, UK, the band trade guitars, banjos, fiddles and more, clambering from song to song through shows that set Moonshine-fuelled hoedowns against sombre Baptist hymns, cockeyed ragtime and sweetheart waltzes. They will be performing as a duo.

Woven Sky are a new trio consisting of Dan Stewart (Rattle on The Stovepipe), Guy Hayes and Sarah Hill. They play folk songs from Sussex and beyond with accompaniment on banjo, guitar and fiddle. They interpret diverse sources from traditional singers, Sacred Harp and Appalachian fiddle music. With these broad influences they deliver pared-down, uncomplicated renditions staying true to the songs and the singers that passed them down.

Lis Stewart, Jess Cahill and Chris Dyer come together in unusual and rather marvellous combinations of nyckelharpa, fiddles, hurdy-gurdy, duet concertina, melodeon and voice. They will be performing their own arrangements of traditional dance tunes and songs from France, Scandinavia and England, along with some more contemporary material.

We are very pleased to welcome back the mega great awesome duo that is Cath & Phil Tyler as our next guest act!  Cath and Phil bring together folk music from both sides of the Atlantic using guitar, banjo, voice and fiddle. Described as having a wonderful combination of earthiness and grit, the duo performs raw yet beautifully heartfelt songs with immaculate musicianship. They released their new album The Ox and The Ax in March 2018.
